Certified Barber in New York City. Personal display of haircuts.

Profile of a client in a red and black cape: waves on top, a low taper at the temple and a sharp line-up at the front.
A barber's hand holds a client's braids back, showing the taper at the temple. The client wears the same red and black cape.

No. 01, in the chair: waves on top, a low taper at the temple, a sharp line at the front. Red cape, shop lights, New York.

Turn the chair.

A cut is judged from the side and the back, not only from the mirror in front of you.

Hands on.

No. 02: braids held back so the taper underneath shows.

A fade runs from skin to length. Clipper guards cut in fixed steps; the blend is the work between them, until no step shows.

  2. #3 3/8 in
  3. #2 1/4 in
  4. #1.5 3/16 in
  5. #1 1/8 in

  7. Skin shaved
The side of a head in section, neckline at the bottom. Each bar is a hair length. Guards leave steps; blending turns them into one clean slope.

Words for the chair

Fade
Hair runs from very short, or skin, at the bottom to longer on top, with no visible line between the lengths.
Taper
A fade kept tight to the edges: the sideburns and the neckline. More length stays through the sides.
Skin fade
Also called a bald fade. The shortest part is taken down to the skin.
Low, mid, high
Where the fade starts: just above the ear, around the temple, or up near the corners of the head.
Line-up
Also edge-up or shape-up. Sharp, straight edges at the forehead, temples and ears.
Guard
The clip-on comb that sets clipper length. A higher number leaves longer hair.
Blend
Smoothing the step between two lengths until no line shows.
Waves
A rippled pattern in short hair on top, trained with brushing and a durag.

Words shift from chair to chair. When in doubt, show a photo.

Bring the brief.

Most cuts come down to two answers: how short on the sides, and how much length on top. A photo settles the rest.

  1. A reference photo. Length, fade height and shape in one look.
  2. Sides. How short, and where the fade starts: low, mid or high.
  3. Top. How much length to keep.
  4. Edges. A sharp line-up, or a natural edge.
  5. Routine. How you style it at home, and when you plan to come back.
  6. Speak up mid-cut. Changes are easiest before the last pass.
